UX Designer

The Digital Transformation Group 
The purpose of this group is to accelerate digital transformation of government services for Victorians and shared services across the VPS. The group is central to DGS’ strategic and reform agenda, and drives service on-boarding, customer centricity and transformation including through digital platforms capability. Its priorities are to develop Whole of Victorian Government (WOVG) policies and projects that address the opportunities and risks of digital transformation and WOVG digital platforms and infrastructure that improve productivity and effectiveness. 

About the Role
Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Delivery, Policy, and Design leaders to create compelling, personalised experiences that support and empower all Victorians with low/no touch, effortless interactions which follow universally accessible patterns. You’ll ensure solutions are evidence-based, inclusive, and deliver value for both Victorians and Government. You will have the exciting and rare opportunity to design initiatives, building modern and innovative government services. 

Key Accountabilities

1. Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Delivery, Policy, and Design leaders to create compelling, personalised experiences that support and empower all Victorians with low/no touch, effortless interactions which follow universally accessible patterns. 

2. Design and validate innovative solutions, working with stakeholders to understand and balance customer, business, technical and regulatory requirements. 

3. Contribute to ensuring our products deliver on our organisational goals, meet quality benchmarks and are regularly released. 

4. Present compelling stories and craft strategies with a variety of stakeholders, bringing them along the journey. 

5. Contribute to the development and maintenance of design systems, style guides, and interaction patterns to ensure consistency and coherence across our digital platforms  

6. Plan and participate in user research activities to gain insights into user behaviours, preferences, and pain points, and use this knowledge to inform and validate design decisions through usability testing 

7. Support and facilitate workshops for alignment, ideation, and iteration – for small and large groups – either remotely and or in-person.  

8. Maintain effective relationships, consulting and negotiating with internal and external stakeholders at peer or senior levels. Relying on formal and informal communication channels to achieve goals and engage stakeholders to help them identify areas and opportunities for improvement 

9.  Actively present designs in design team rituals, seeking feedback and iterating on work in a collaborative way. 

Key Selection Criteria

1. Demonstrates a deep understanding of end-to-end product design — from discovery and research through to prototyping, testing, and validation with users and data.  

2. Demonstrates having worked in cross functional product teams, influencing stakeholders and advocating for the customer to influence great design outcomes 

3. Provides evidence of crafting and presenting compelling stories and strategies with a variety of stakeholders, bringing them along the journey. 

4. Demonstrates strong design research skills from discovery through to user testing and presenting those insights in a compelling way. 

5. Demonstrates a high level of craft proficiency and extensive product design toolkit, including: Service design and UX tools and methods; research tools, methods and platforms; using Figma to produce high fidelity UI designs and Figjam for collaboration; understanding of and contributions to design systems. 

This role is a fixed term position available for a period of 12 Months. This position is only open to applicants with relevant rights to work in Australia.
