About the role

As part of the Financial Reporting and Compliance team, the Financial Accountant position will provide taxation, compliance, financial accounting services, transactional support, information and reports to their clients.  This position plays an active role in the provision of advice and support including reasoned recommendations, options and solutions to financial accounting and reporting issues to designated client groups within the department and the broader portfolio. 

This role is also responsible for providing day-to-day assistance and advice on financial accounting issues and ensuring the availability of appropriate and timely month-end information and reports to allow for informed decision making.

Key Accountabilities include:

The Financial Accountant will have the following key activities and deliverables:

  • Provide taxation and financial reporting services to the department, portfolio agencies and external clients, typical outputs include: 
  • Participating in the end of month processing tasks including processing payroll transactions and other month end journals, balance sheet reconciliations and reporting.
  • Providing advice on payroll accounting matters.

About you 

To be considered for the role, you must be able to demonstrate: 

  • Financial Accounting and Taxation Obliations: Excellent financial skills and demonstrated experience in financial accounting and taxataion obligation requirements for FBT, Payroll Tax, GST .
  • Communication and stakeholder management: Strong communication skills to convey key messages to stakeholders; Forges productive partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. Finds innovative solutions to resolve stakeholder issues; Effectively manages risks to service delivery.
  • Planning and organising:  Sets clearly defined objectives and priorities and operates accordingly, reviewing and adjusting as required; Identifies processes, tasks and resources required to achieve a goal.
  • Conceptual and analytical ability: Deals with concepts and complexity comfortably; Uses analytical and conceptual skills to reason through problems; Has creative ideas and can project how these can link to innovations.
  • Detail focus: Observes fine details; Identifies gaps in information; Looks for logical sequences of information; Highlights practical considerations of plans and activities.
  • Flexibility and adaptability: Demonstrated ability to work in an uncertain and/or changing environment, adapting to new ways of working deliver results and meet challenges.

Mandatory requirements

  • Accreditation as a Chartered Accountant (CA) or Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) is required for this role.
  • A relevant tertiary degree or post graduate studies in accounting or finance will be highly regarded.
  • A strong understanding of taxation obligations (state and federal) is desired for this role.
