The Consumer Affairs and Local Government (CALG) Group improves how customers and businesses engage with government by delivering strategy, policy, regulatory design, and customer-focused services across the consumer affairs and local government portfolios. Within CALG, the Regulatory Policy Division leads evidence-based policy and legislative reform by conducting research, developing reform options, providing expert advice to the Minister, and delivering end-to-end legislative and regulatory initiatives. Working collaboratively with government, industry, community stakeholders, and national counterparts, the division ensures reforms are co-designed, aligned with best practice, and strengthen governance, regulation, and service outcomes across the consumer affairs, renters, and local government sectors.
About the Role
The Senior Legislation and Policy Coordinator will play a key role across the division, providing high quality advice relating to the development of legislation and regulations in the Consumer Affairs and Local Government portfolios. This role involves working closely with the Lead Legislation Officer and the Manager Policy Coordination to coordinate key work program deliverables, ensuring milestones are met and legislative and regulatory initiatives are aligned with government priorities, compliance with legal frameworks and effective communication with stakeholders.
This role will report to the Lead Legislation Officer and will prove high quality and timely advice to them and the broader division’s leadership team on a range of complex matters. You will advise on the implications of legislative and regulatory initiatives, and show strong initiative to manage potential legal risks, challenges and opportunities. You will work collaboratively across multiple portfolios, participating in national and cross-government projects, engaging with key internal and external stakeholders as part of a high-performing team to manage the preparation and lodgement of cabinet and parliamentary documents, Minister and Secretary briefings in the Consumer Affairs and Local Government portfolios.
Key Accountabilities
Prepare or assist in the preparation and lodgement of Cabinet submissions and Parliamentary documents for the Consumer Affairs portfolio
Support and coordinate the effective operations and functions of Regulatory Policy ensuring business needs are met in a timely manner and services are provided with high quality administration/administration.
Effectively negotiate and liaise with key consumer and industry stakeholders and stakeholders across government on legislative and regulatory proposals to support resolving complex problems that have system wide and community impacts.
Develop high quality, authoritative and comprehensive advice to support the Minister, the Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Executives and Senior Officers on complex legislative and regulatory matters.
About You
We are seeking applicants who have demonstrated experience from the following criteria:
Policy and Legislative Reform Expertise – Demonstrated experience delivering end-to-end legislative and regulatory reforms, with strong knowledge of public policy, law, and government processes, and the ability to develop innovative, evidence-based policy solutions.
Project Delivery and Critical Thinking – Proven ability to manage complex projects, solve problems strategically, apply critical thinking, establish effective governance, and deliver high-quality outcomes that support government priorities.
Stakeholder Engagement and Communication – Strong interpersonal, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build productive partnerships, collaborate across diverse groups, influence outcomes, and communicate effectively on complex or sensitive issues.
Collaboration, Innovation and Outcome Focus – Ability to work collaboratively, foster innovation and continuous improvement, promote inclusion, and develop policies and programs that deliver positive community outcomes through co-design and evidence-based decision-making.
