About the role 

Based in Ballarat OR Geelong– (Flexibility may be available on Location)


The Sustainability and Environment Officer provides environmental and sustainability advice across regional DTP projects, supporting investigations, planning, assessment and delivery while ensuring compliance with State and Commonwealth environmental legislation. The role provides technical expertise to achieve positive environmental outcomes for government and local communities.

The role undertakes environmental assessments, reviews data and reports, manages environmental requirements on and off-site, and supports projects during and after construction. It also develops sustainability initiatives, promotes minimal environmental harm, and builds effective relationships with DTP staff, government agencies, contractors and the community. The role requires sound judgement, initiative and adaptability in a changing environment.
 

What we’re looking for (Selection Criteria) 

You’re someone who: 

  • Applies strong environmental expertise, interpreting and applying Victorian and Australian environmental legislation, policies and standards to support compliant and sustainable outcomes.
  • Uses critical thinking and sound judgement, assessing complex issues, identifying information gaps and developing practical solutions in line with environmental requirements.
  • Collaborates effectively with stakeholders and experts, building partnerships, sharing information and incorporating diverse perspectives to achieve agreed environmental outcomes.
  • Delivers environmental projects effectively, coordinating tasks, monitoring progress, managing requirements and taking corrective action when needed.
  • Is adaptable, resilient and future-focused, responding positively to changing priorities, embracing new approaches and staying up to date with best practice, technology and emerging developments.

Qualifications and experience 

You’ll bring: 

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in environmental or related discipline, with at least 3 years’ experience in an environmental field (mandatory).
  • Australian driver’s licence (mandatory).
  • Vegetation Quality Assessment Accreditation, experience managing environmental requirements, preparing consultant briefs and reviewing environmental reports, and/or experience in road construction (desirable).

Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa necessary for the nature of the position.
