About the role 

This is a Fixed Term Position until 1 July 2027

The Archaeologist, Major Projects supports Heritage Victoria’s statutory responsibilities by assessing heritage places, objects and historical archaeological sites, providing expert advice, and contributing to heritage decision-making under the Heritage Act 2017. The role conducts research, prepares reports and recommendations, and supports heritage assessments and approvals.

You will work with government, industry, community and property stakeholders to manage heritage matters, provide archaeological expertise, and support major projects. The role also contributes to policy development, stakeholder engagement and collaborative delivery of Heritage Victoria’s priorities.

Qualifications and experience 

You’ll bring: 

  • Experience working with statutory historic heritage with a strong focus on historical archaeology (mandatory).
  • A tertiary qualification in Archaeology (mandatory).
  • A degree at Honours or Post-graduate level in Archaeology (desirable).
  • An understanding of the philosophical and practical issues related to the management of cultural heritage places, with a focus on historical archaeology (desirable).
  • Experience with the application of significance thresholds, and the preparation of Statements of Significance (desirable).
  • Experience with the investigation of historical archaeological sites including survey, excavation, and post-excavation analysis and reporting (desirable).
  • Experience with the identification, analysis and management of historical archaeological artefacts and assemblages (desirable).
  • A detailed knowledge of the Heritage Act 2017, and Part 6 in particular, is required.
