About the role

This is a two-year Fixed Term Graduate position.

The Graduate – Legal will commence in the Office of General Counsel and complete rotations through the three legal branches with DTP, covering Public Law and Information Access, Commercial and Operations and Legislation.  The Graduate – Legal will (under guidance and supervision), be responsible for providing advice on a wide range of legal issues including statutory interpretation, administrative law, employment law, human rights law, FOI and privacy, legislative drafting, commercial law and commercial disputes. 

The role will support the management of general litigation and the drafting of contracts and legislation. The role requires taking initiative and having attention to detail, a willingness to learn and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in Legal and the wider Department. The Graduate – Legal must have excellent research and computer literacy skills, particularly in Microsoft Office.

You're someone who:

• Is curious and willing to learn across different areas of law, seeking guidance and applying feedback to develop your skills
• Builds positive working relationships and works collaboratively with colleagues, clients and other stakeholders
• Is organised and reliable, with the ability to manage competing tasks and meet agreed deadlines
• Shows initiative and sound judgement, while recognising when to seek guidance and support on unfamiliar or complex matters

Qualifications and experience

You'll bring:

Mandatory

• A completed Australian tertiary qualification in Law

Desirable

• Admitted, or eligible to be admitted, as a lawyer in Victoria

Who can apply?

• Graduated, or be due to graduate, from an Australian or New Zealand University between 1 December 2024 and 31 January 2027.
• Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, New Zealand citizen, or hold a valid visa with full working rights for the required period.
