About this position
The Director, Building Policy and Intergovernmental provides strategic leadership to advance the Government’s building and plumbing policy agenda. The role leads complex legislative and regulatory reform, oversees priority policy initiatives, and represents the Department in key intergovernmental forums.
Partnering closely with senior executives, the Director delivers authoritative advice on complex and emerging issues, drives whole-of-government priorities, and fosters strong partnerships across government, industry and the community. This role also leads high-performing teams and ensures effective governance, planning and resource management to achieve lasting outcomes for Victorians.
Position Outcomes
- Provide leadership, coordination and advice in the delivery of intergovernmental services, representing the Department externally and contributing to high-level working groups and national forums.
- Lead the development and delivery of complex legislative, regulatory and policy initiatives related to the building and plumbing industries, ensuring alignment with government priorities.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to support strategic planning and the delivery of departmental priorities, including contributions to the annual State Budget process.
- Provide high-quality, authoritative strategic and operational advice on emerging and complex issues, while building strong partnerships across government, industry and the community.
- Effectively lead high-performing teams and organisational reform initiatives, champion an inclusive culture, and ensure strong governance, resource management and workforce planning.

Qualifications and role specific requirements
- Relevant tertiary qualification and/or experience with a proven record of success working in a large complex organisation, alongside demonstrated contemporary leadership experience with a proven record of effectively engaging senior level stakeholders and leading complex projects.
- An understanding of program and project management tools and a demonstrated ability to apply these in a pragmatic and fit for purpose way.
- Extensive knowledge of the building and plumbing system in Victoria (desirable).
Pre-employment checks and employment conditions
All new appointments to the department will be subject to a National Criminal Records Check, Misconduct Screening, and a Qualification Check where there is a requirement for a mandatory qualification. Information provided to the Department of Transport and Planning will be treated in the strictest confidence consistent with the requirements of the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014.
Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa necessary for the nature of the position.
Recipients of Victorian Public Service (VPS) voluntary departure packages should note that re-employment restrictions apply.
Non-VPS applicants will be subject to a probation period of six months.
