About the Division

The Office of the Secretary leads, oversees and coordinates all departmental functions, portfolio-wide activities and interactions with DTP Ministers.


About the Role 

This is a 5 year fixed term SES 1 position

The Director, Priority Projects plays a critical role in coordinating and driving the department’s most strategically significant initiatives. This position leads integration across the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) and collaborates with other government departments and agencies to ensure that key projects align with government priorities and deliver measurable public value. By fostering a unified approach to planning and delivery, the Director ensures that complex, high-impact initiatives progress efficiently and strategically.

Reporting directly to the Secretary and working closely with the executive team, the Director provides strategic oversight, authoritative advice, and high-level coordination to support informed decision-making. The role requires exceptional acumen in navigating complex policy landscapes and an ability to deliver clarity and alignment in a dynamic environment. Success depends on the capacity to anticipate challenges, influence outcomes, and ensure the department’s strategic objectives are advanced through cohesive project governance and collaboration.

As a senior leader, the Director champions capability, engagement, and inclusion across teams, fostering a culture that reflects the department’s values and commitment to excellence. The position demands strong stakeholder management to facilitate effective communication, remove barriers, and promote collaboration across multiple agencies. Additionally, the Director is accountable for sound resource and financial management, ensuring compliance with governance frameworks while delivering high-quality outcomes that align with departmental and whole-of-government priorities.

Qualifications and role specific requirements 

  • Demonstrated capability in overseeing strategic projects and maintaining productive relationships with senior executives and Ministerial stakeholders

 

Pre-employment checks and employment conditions  

All new appointments to the department will be subject to a National Criminal Records Check, Misconduct Screening, and a Qualification Check where there is a requirement for a mandatory qualification. Information provided to the Department of Transport and Planning will be treated in the strictest confidence consistent with the requirements of the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014. 

Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa necessary for the nature of the position. 

Recipients of Victorian Public Service (VPS) voluntary departure packages should note that re-employment restrictions apply. 

Non-VPS applicants will be subject to a probation period of six months.
