About the role 

This is a Fixed Term Position until 30 June 2027

The GIS Specialist is responsible for creating, maintaining and delivering high-quality maps, spatial analysis and reporting products that support transport and planning initiatives across the department. The role manages spatial data, ensures data accuracy and integrity, and provides technical GIS support to project teams by translating complex spatial requirements into clear and practical outputs.

The position also supports the maintenance and improvement of GIS systems, databases, workflows and processes to enhance efficiency and quality. Working collaboratively with stakeholders, the role documents standards and procedures, promotes knowledge sharing, and contributes to safe, inclusive and flexible team operations.
 

What we’re looking for (Selection Criteria) 

You’re someone who: 

• Uses advanced GIS tools and spatial data management practices to produce accurate maps, spatial analysis and insights that support informed decision-making.
• Leverages digital technologies, spatial databases and scripting tools (e.g. Python and SQL) to manage data, automate workflows and improve efficiency.
• Applies critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyse complex spatial challenges and develop practical, evidence-based solutions.
• Demonstrates a strong customer focus by building effective relationships, seeking feedback and identifying opportunities to improve services and outcomes.
• Drives continuous improvement by contributing to system enhancements, data and technology changes, and promoting innovative ways of working.

Qualifications and experience 

You’ll bring: 

• Relevant tertiary qualifications in Geospatial Sciences, Geographic Information Systems, or a related discipline, together with demonstrated experience using professional GIS software such as QGIS and/or ESRI ArcGIS (mandatory).
• Demonstrated ability to work with spatial databases, including PostgreSQL/PostGIS, and perform spatial data queries and analysis (mandatory).
• Technical knowledge of Python or SQL, with an understanding of spatial data visualisation tools, government processes, and the Victorian planning system being highly regarded.
