About the role 

This is a fixed term full time opportunity until 30 June 2027.

The Heritage Officer (Permits) assesses permit applications, exemptions and other statutory applications for changes to places and objects on the Victorian Heritage Register. The role provides objective recommendations, prepares high-quality reports and correspondence, and ensures applications are assessed within legislative timeframes.

The position also provides specialist heritage advice to owners, consultants and stakeholders, supports Heritage Council hearings, and builds effective relationships across government, industry and community. It contributes to efficient permit systems, record keeping and reporting, while working collaboratively to support organisational priorities and promote culturally safe, respectful and inclusive environments..

Qualifications and experience 

You’ll bring: 

  • A tertiary qualification in a heritage-related discipline, such as architecture, conservation, engineering, planning, archaeology, landscape or horticulture, with experience in heritage conservation (mandatory).
  • Understanding of the philosophical and practical issues involved in conserving and managing the State’s most significant heritage places, and knowledge of the Heritage Act 2017 (mandatory).
  • Experience working in a heritage-related field. 

Pre-employment checks and employment conditions  

Relevant pre-employment screening and reference checks will be required. 

Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa necessary for the nature of the position.
