Public Law and Information Access branch provides litigation support and legal advice in government decision-making, responding to inquiries and investigations, information access, planning and heritage matters, native title and First Peoples legal matters.
About the role
Full or part time (flexibility will be considered)
This opportunity will see you joining a highly skilled team within DTP Legal, supporting the department’s Planning portfolio and broader public law functions. Working closely with internal stakeholders, you will help deliver key policy initiatives, programs and projects that support Victorian communities while identifying and managing legal risk. Under supervision, you will provide legal advice across areas including planning and environment law, administrative law, statutory interpretation, heritage matters, litigation, dispute resolution and legislative development. The role offers exposure to significant planning matters and complex public law issues, providing an excellent opportunity to build your legal expertise in a collaborative environment. You will contribute to strategic legal advice, litigation management and client-focused service delivery, while working as part of a supportive team committed to achieving strong outcomes for government.
What we’re looking for (Selection Criteria)
We are seeking an emerging legal professional with strong communication skills and the ability to provide clear, practical and client-focused legal support. You will bring sound critical thinking and problem-solving capability, using analysis and judgement to recommend effective solutions across a range of legal matters. The role requires strong stakeholder management, responsiveness and a collaborative approach that builds trust and positive working relationships. You will demonstrate adaptability, resilience and a willingness to learn in a dynamic environment. Technically, you will have foundational capability in providing legal advice, litigation and dispute resolution, and statutory interpretation, with the ability to apply legal principles ethically and effectively. A positive attitude and commitment to delivering quality outcomes will be highly valued.

Qualifications and experience
Mandatory
- An Australian lawyer, within the meaning of the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Victoria), holding or eligible to hold an Australian practising certificate.
- Demonstrated capability in providing legal advice and/or litigation management, under supervision, in two or more of the following key practice areas: planning and environment law, administrative law and statutory interpretation, litigation and dispute resolution, heritage, legislation development.
Pre-employment checks and employment conditions

Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa necessary for the nature of the position.
