The Office of the Secretary is a Group within the Department of Transport and Planning, and is responsible for the development of an integrated, sustainable and safe transport system for all Victorians and includes three groups: Communications and Customer Experience, Intergovernmental Relations and Legal.


Communications and Customer Experience leads best-practice communications and engagement to connect DTP with our people, customers, industry partners and communities. We work collaboratively to enrich our customers’ experience of our services, provide the information people need to get around safely and smoothly, and engage with Victorians about how they live and move, now and into the future.

 


About the role

Key Selection Criteria


The role requires strong experience in media issues management, with the ability to prepare high-quality communications and respond effectively to media enquiries. Success in the position relies on excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills, creativity in developing innovative communication strategies, and the ability to build strong stakeholder relationships. The ideal candidate will be proactive, adaptable, and capable of managing competing priorities while working both independently and collaboratively within a team.

Position accountabilities
The Department of Transport and Planning is seeking a skilled Media Advisor to join its dynamic communications team. This role offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment, supporting the delivery of clear and engaging media content that promotes the Department’s objectives and enhances its reputation.


As a Media Advisor, you will prepare high-quality media materials, including responses, releases, event briefs and Q&A documents, ensuring they are accurate, clear and delivered within tight deadlines. You will also contribute to the development and implementation of media relations projects and initiatives, while supporting communication strategies across key Departmental business areas.


The role involves providing trusted media and communications advice to senior managers, preparing them for media interviews and briefings, and coaching them on effective messaging and delivery. You will be expected to apply strong research and communication skills, exercise sound professional judgement, and identify opportunities to proactively promote the Department’s work. In addition, you will play a key role in escalating and helping to manage emerging issues that could affect the organisation’s reputation.


We are looking for someone with excellent written and verbal communication skills, proven experience in media and issues management, and the ability to deliver results under pressure. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders are essential, as is creativity in developing fresh and effective media approaches.

Qualifications and experience
An appropriate tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in journalism, public relations, communications or a similar discipline.
