About the role
The Media Lead is a senior role within a fast-paced media team, responsible for crafting clear, compelling narratives and managing complex media issues. The position works closely with journalists, subject matter experts and ministerial advisers to communicate policy, operational updates and key transport information to the public. It requires strong writing, storytelling, relationship management and critical thinking skills, along with the ability to simplify complex information under tight deadlines. The role also provides leadership by mentoring media advisors and maintaining a calm, solutions-focused approach in high-pressure environments.

The role is responsible for producing clear, accurate media materials under tight deadlines, including responses, releases, briefs and Q&As. It provides strategic media and reputational advice to executives, including preparing spokespeople with key messaging and guidance for media engagement. The position also identifies proactive media opportunities, manages and escalates emerging issues, and works to mitigate reputational risks. In addition, it builds strong relationships with media contacts to support accurate coverage and develops social media and communication content to support announcements and events.

Qualifications and experience
An appropriate tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in journalism, public relations, communications or a similar discipline (mandatory).
Five or more years’ experience in a communications or media role at a government agency or public entity (desirable).

Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa necessary for the nature of the position.
