DTP Legal provides legal, legislative, commercial, information access and policy advice and support to the Secretary and Department in the achievement of the transport system vision, objectives and decision-making principles. DTP Legal has three branches: Public Law & Information Access, Operations & Commercial and Legislation. This role is within the Public Law & Information Access branch.
Public Law & Information Access covers a diverse range of legal areas including administrative law, general litigation, personal injury, property damage, coronial inquiries, human rights, privacy and data sharing, freedom of information, intergovernmental matters and First Peoples legal issues.

The Paralegal is responsible for providing and supporting a range of paralegal and administrative duties, and project management support to the Director Legal, Public Law and the Public Law team. We particularly encourage recent law graduates and students who have completed a minimum of three years of law school to apply.
You must show initiative and attention to detail, be willing to learn and work collaboratively with colleagues in Public Law & Information Access Branch and the broader DTP Legal group, and have excellent research and computer literacy skills, particularly in Microsoft Office.

Position Outcomes / Accountabilities
- Undertake research and analysis on a range of legal issues to support the members and the objectives of the team.
- Prepare and process correspondence and legal documentation under supervision to support the delivery of legal services.
- Manage a range of administrative tasks for the Public Law & Information Access Branch team including intake and work allocation, data entry, reporting, induction, completion of forms, payment of invoices and obtaining signatures.
- Support process improvements and best practices in relation to legal matter management, file management, workflow management, and records management.
- Exercise professional judgement in prioritising incoming issues, redirecting or addressing urgent matters, and facilitating follow-up actions.
- Establish and maintain working relationships with key stakeholders including internal clients, legal firms, the Victorian Bar and Courts and Tribunals to progress legal matters.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across DTP Legal and key internal clients.
- In line with Section 31A of the Public Administration Act 2004 (Vic) other duties may be assigned consistent with employment classification, skills, and capabilities.

Their ability to balance multiple tasks while ensuring accuracy and timeliness will be key to achieving successful outcomes in a fast-paced legal and policy environment. This combination of technical and interpersonal strengths positions them to make a meaningful contribution to the organisation.

Qualifications and Experience
Mandatory
- Experience in using computer applications, including electronic case and records management systems, Microsoft office products and Cloud systems;
- Experience in paralegal or legal administrative support duties.
- Qualification in Law or currently in the process of fulfilling a qualification in Law.
Desirable
- Exposure to legal work or experience within a legal practice environment where litigation was undertaken.
