About the Role
Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, you will use your capacity to provide innovative, solutions-focused, and strategic legal advice to manage a wide array of interesting and complex matters across a broad range of practice areas. You will be a mentor to others in the team, ensuring that the legal services the team provides are high-quality, collaborative and practical, and delivered with a commitment to adaptability and innovative ways of working. You will also play a pivotal role in ensuring that our legal strategies align seamlessly with ST Vic’s strategic objectives and its commitment to serving the community.
The responsibilities of the Principal Lawyer will include, but are not limited to:
- Delivering practical, strategic, and high-quality legal advice on a diverse range of legal matters, encompassing general operational advice, administrative law, commercial and contract law, statutory interpretation, workplace relations, prosecutions, litigation, FOI, privacy, and governance.
- Mentoring others and providing effective leadership to support the legal services branch on its journey to becoming a modern and contemporary legal services unit that embraces technology and a continuous improvement mindset.
- Preparing and presenting briefing papers to senior management to inform operational and strategic decision making, including analysis of legal risks and opportunities.
- Collaborating across the business on strategic initiatives and projects, providing legal advice and expertise and inspiring high levels of trust and confidence.
- Establishing and maintaining effective partnerships with relevant internal and external stakeholders to support operational and strategic decision making that align with ST Vic’s strategic objectives and outcomes.
- Promote and support safe, inclusive, and flexible team operations

Qualifications
A relevant degree in law and a current Victorian legal practicing certificate.
