About the role

Job Location: 1 Spring Street, Melbourne

This is a Fixed Term Position until 30 June 2027
The Principal Project Officer manages major planning projects referred to Panels Victoria, providing expert project management, strategic advice and technical support for public hearings, advisory committees and environmental assessments. The role coordinates hearings, prepares key documentation, supports Panel report writing, analyses complex submissions and evidence, and mentors junior staff.

The role also builds strong stakeholder relationships across government, councils and the community, ensuring projects are delivered fairly, transparently and on time. It identifies process improvements, represents the organisation in meetings and forums, and provides expert advice to minimise procedural and legal risks while supporting efficient project delivery.

Qualifications and experience 

You’ll bring: 

  • A relevant qualification in Planning, Environmental Assessment, Law or a related discipline, with sound knowledge of the Planning and Environment Act 1987 and related legislation (mandatory).
  • A strong understanding of the Victorian Planning Provisions, with the ability to provide technical and policy advice, undertake analysis and apply planning controls to achieve outcomes (mandatory).
  • Proven experience managing complex projects and public hearing processes, producing high-quality written documentation, building strong stakeholder relationships, and supporting cost recovery and time recording requirements (desirable).
