Transport Services is a Group within the Department of Transport & Planning and is responsible for delivering safe, reliable and accessible transport infrastructure and services to all Victorians.
Metropolitan Transport Division in Transport Services Group maintains and renews existing assets and plans, develops and delivers upgrades to the metropolitan road network, pedestrian, cycling, bus and tram infrastructure. We manage the metropolitan bus contracts, overseeing operator performance and asset management. We’re focused on outcomes that deliver more choice, connections and confidence in our travel, ensuring the whole transport network works as one to deliver better services and outcomes.
About the Role
This is a 24-month fixed term role
The Project Officer supports the delivery of capital road projects by applying project management, contract management, and engineering expertise to ensure alignment with the agreed scope and Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) standards.
Working under supervision, the role involves using professional judgement to plan, implement, and monitor road and bridge works, ensuring outcomes meet quality, cost, time, safety, and environmental requirements in line with relevant policies and guidelines.
Project sites are based across metropolitan Melbourne.

Position Outcomes / Accountabilities
- Project Assurance - Under supervision, exercise professional judgement to plan, procure, implement and monitor road and bridge works to achieve project scope, quality, cost, time, safety and environmental requirements in accordance with relevant policies and toolkits.
- Project Monitoring - Under supervision prepare, monitor and report on the physical and financial status of projects.
- Construction and OH&S Advice - Seek advice and apply knowledge on road and bridge design, construction and maintenance practices and standards to prepare and administer contracts for works.
- Quality and Risk Management - Under supervision, exercise professional judgement to anticipate and assess potential project risks and develop necessary mitigation plans.
- Community Engagement - Engage and manage key stakeholders internally and externally
- Supplier Management - Understand and hold contractors to account for technical, safety and permit requirements.
- Promote and support safe, inclusive and flexible team operations.
Key Selection Criteria
The Department of Transport and Planning is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented professional to join our team as a Project Officer.

As a Project Officer, you will be responsible for carrying out project tasks in line with established plans, policies, and processes. Where guidance is not defined, you will use your judgement to prioritise based on urgency and impact. A strong foundation in critical thinking is essential, as you will be expected to analyse problems, contribute relevant ideas, and seek appropriate guidance when needed.
You will demonstrate an understanding of how business processes impact your work and be able to identify potential gaps or inefficiencies. With a customer-focused approach, you’ll maintain clear and responsive communication with stakeholders, ensuring that inquiries and issues are addressed promptly and thoroughly.

Qualifications and Experience
Mandatory
- Engineer, project management, or similar, tertiary qualifications
Desirable
- Understanding of project management principles
- Understanding of construction principles
- Demonstrated experience in dealing with customers/Clients
