About the role 

This is a Fixed Term Position until 30th of May 2027

Job Location: 2 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne

The Senior Data Scientist applies data science and machine learning techniques to analyse complex data, develop models and deliver insights that support decision-making across the Department. The role uses statistical analysis, predictive modelling and data products to address business challenges, including understanding transport usage and travel patterns.

The role works with large-scale data platforms, develops and improves analytical solutions, and translates complex findings into clear advice for stakeholders. It collaborates with technical teams, supports continuous improvement, shares knowledge and builds strong relationships to deliver effective data-driven outcomes.

You’re someone who: 

  • Applies advanced data science, analytics and modelling skills to develop solutions that support strategic and operational decision-making.
  • Leads the development, testing and implementation of data models, data products and analytical solutions that deliver meaningful insights.
  • Communicates complex data findings clearly through effective reporting, visualisation and presentations tailored to different audiences.
  • Collaborates effectively with teams and stakeholders, shares knowledge and supports capability development across others.
  • Adapts to changing priorities, manages projects effectively and applies data engineering practices to deliver reliable, scalable outcomes.

Qualifications and experience 

You’ll bring: 

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant or related discipline. (Mandatory)
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, with the ability to apply statistical and data science techniques, including predictive modelling, to solve real-world problems and support data-driven decision-making. (Mandatory)
  • Demonstrated experience working with large and complex datasets and data products, with strong technical capability in programming languages and analytical tools such as SQL, Python, R and GIS. (Mandatory)
  • Experience working with distributed data processing frameworks and cloud-based analytics platforms (e.g. PySpark, Databricks), and familiarity with model lifecycle and experiment tracking tools (e.g. MLflow) is desirable. (Desirable)
