About the Role

Job Location: 2 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne

The role designs and delivers Generative AI and automation solutions to improve how the Department of Transport and Planning operates. It builds scalable systems, turns business needs into practical AI tools, and ensures solutions are secure, reliable, and meet government standards. The role works closely with engineers, analysts, policy teams, and senior leaders, while mentoring staff and building capability. Success means faster, better-informed decisions, more efficient processes, and responsible use of AI across the department.

 

What we’re looking for (Selection Criteria) 

You’re someone who: 

  • Enjoys thinking ahead, exploring new technology, and finding better ways to improve systems, processes, and services.
  • Can design and deliver AI and automation solutions, translate business needs into practical tools, and communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Has strong experience in Generative AI, automation, cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, Databricks), and building scalable, reliable systems.
  • Can lead and support others by mentoring teams, encouraging innovation, and creating a clear link between work and real-world impact.
  • Has solid engineering skills, including system design, deployment, testing, and maintaining high-quality, production-ready solutions.

Qualifications and experience 

You’ll bring: 

  • Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field. (Essential)
  • Extensive experience (5+ years) designing, developing, and deploying AI and ML solutions in enterprise or public sector environments. (Essential)
  • Demonstrated experience building and deploying Generative AI applications (e.g., RAG, LLM fine-tuning, AI copilots, or agentic systems). (Essential)
  • Proven track record in implementing AIOps practices and model lifecycle management in cloud-native environments (Azure, AWS, or Databricks). (Essential)
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and ability to communicate technical concepts to executive and non-technical audiences. (Essential)
  • Certification in Azure AI Engineer Associate, AWS ML Specialty, or equivalent. (Desirable)
  • Experience with Databricks Unity Catalog, vector databases. (Desirable)
