About the Role
This is an Ongoing role.The Senior Policy Officer has responsibility for delivering regulatory analysis and support across the transport portfolio. The position will be responsible for working with stakeholders within DTP, across government and externally on the development of legislative and regulatory proposals and for the provision of advice on existing frameworks as they relate to a range of transport policy and operational issues and requirements. This can include reviews of existing regulatory frameworks to ensure they are fit for purpose. The position will also provide advice on national transport legislative reform programs relating to Automated Vehicles, Australian Road Rules, Heavy Vehicles and other national transport frameworks.

Position Outcomes / Accountabilities
- With the Manager, National Legislative Reform, lead the preparation of thorough analysis, and clear and authoritative advice and recommendations on national transport legislation reforms and other issues to the highest levels of Government, including developing material for Ministerial and Cabinet consideration as required, often under significant time constraints.
- Represent the branch and division on working groups and other forums within DTP, across the Victorian Government and at national transport forums, ensuring the branch’s and Department’s views are put forward and key risks and issues are raised within the team.
- Identify and develop legislative and /or regulatory policy proposals at the state and national level that will deliver better outcomes for Victorians.
Key Selection Criteria
We are seeking a skilled Senior Policy Officer to drive policy development and project delivery within the Department of Transport and Planning. This role requires strong analytical abilities, strategic thinking, and stakeholder engagement to shape effective transport policies.
You will develop policies and business cases by gathering and critically analyzing data, evidence, and stakeholder insights. Your ability to articulate the value of proposed solutions and secure necessary resources will be key. Managing projects effectively, you will define work activities, coordinate efforts, and ensure timely delivery of outcomes.Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential. You will evaluate diverse perspectives, identify gaps in information, and recommend well-informed decisions. Clear and impactful communication is crucial, as you will present findings, draft policy documents, and engage with stakeholders to build support and understanding.Effective stakeholder management is vital. You will identify key parties, manage expectations, and foster productive relationships while addressing concerns constructively.
