Transport Service is a Group within Department of Transport & Planning, and is responsible for delivering safe, reliable and accessible transport infrastructure and services to all Victorians.

Bus Services is a branch within the Public Transport Division and is responsible for the delivery of bus services, oversight of bus operator contracts and responsibility for the construction and asset maintenance of bus infrastructure.

About the Role

This is a fixed term role (until 30 January 2026)

The Senior Project Engineer is responsible for supporting the development and delivery of bus infrastructure and roadworks linked to changes in the Victorian bus network, driven by the Big Build and timetable updates. The role requires strong Traffic and Infrastructure Engineering expertise to represent Bus Services and support the Public Transport Division. Key duties include site visits, preparing scopes, reviewing designs, and engaging with stakeholders, including LXRP, RPV, MRPV, and NELP. The role also involves processing third-party work applications via the bus stop construction inbox and coordinating with the delivery team to ensure timely and cost-effective project completion.

Position Outcomes / Accountabilities

  • Assist with design development of bus infrastructure and road works required for Network Service Changes by engaging the relevant delivery teams.
  • Initiate and maintain relationships with peers and senior internal and external stakeholders throughout the Major Projects process.
  • Negotiate with stakeholders, peers, industry bodies and other government agencies with the objective of gaining co-operation, influencing views and meeting timelines for delivery of infrastructure projects.
  • Provide subject matter and technical expertise to Major projects (such as LXRP, RPV, MRPV, NELP, etc.) through timely design reviews and attendance at workshops and meetings to protect and aid Bus Services interests.
  • Provide guidance and support to Bus Planning area in DTP when evaluating new bus routes and infrastructure options resulting from Major Projects or Network Service Changes
  • Provide accurate and timely advice to assist senior management with informing business cases and ministerial briefings.
  • Provide technical (traffic and Infrastructure) advice on third party external works when required (such as Councils and Stat Planning Proposals)
  • Carry out Innovative thinking and analysis to influence developments within areas of responsibility.

Key Selection Criteria

The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in Traffic and Infrastructure Engineering, with a solid understanding of Road Safety Rules, Australian Standards, and relevant VicRoads and AustRoads guidelines, applying these effectively in real-world site conditions. They can confidently review and assess technical civil infrastructure designs, ensuring compliance with Engineering standards and the Disability Standard for Accessible Public Transport (DSAPT) 2002.. Highly proficient in GIS tools like MapInfo, and Microsoft Office, they are also skilled in records management. With proven stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, they can lead negotiations and manage relationships with delivery agencies, councils and franchisees. They are driven, solutions-focused, and committed to continuous improvement and effective project delivery.

Qualifications and Experience

Mandatory

 

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in civil engineering or related field.

 

Desirable

  • Qualification or experience in project management or equivalent.
  • Road Safety Auditor / Safe Systems training.
