Title: Lead Engineer - Structures
About the Role
Job Location: Ringwood, Melbourne
Reporting to the Principal Engineer Structures, the Lead Engineer – Structures is responsible for developing and refining standard documentation and practices for the management, design, and construction of bridges and other road-related structures. The role provides expert advice, leads practical improvements in structural design, technology, and innovation, and drives knowledge sharing and capability building within the Structures team and across the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP). It involves fostering strong relationships with other areas of DTP, external agencies, industry, and academia, as well as guiding the resolution of complex technical structural issues where policies or guidelines are unclear or unavailable. The position leads research, analysis, development, and documentation of best practice in structural analysis, condition rating, health monitoring, asset management, and the use of diverse materials and methodologies for various structure types, including bridges and culverts. Additionally, the Lead Engineer supports the Principal Engineer Structures in assessing departures, evaluating new products, and responding to specific industry requests.

Position Outcomes / Accountabilities
- Ability to communicate with internal and external stakeholders to educate, influence and negotiate in a consultative manner with particular focus on structural technology and innovation areas where policies, guidelines and/or precedents are not readily available.
- Utilise technical leadership skills to identify areas for improvement and mentor, coach and share knowledge to promote a culture of ongoing learning among staff, especially in structural and innovation area. Lead with clarity by providing clear expectations, knowledge sharing and ongoing feedback.
- Utilise specialist knowledge of structures, Standards, Codes, Bridge Technical Notes and innovations to deliver expert advice to stakeholders.
- Manage research projects and work with standards bodies to identify and develop new standards, update existing and lead their implementation by DTP.
- Assess new products that may be submitted by industry and develop guidelines, specifications or standards for the implementation of these products into the DTP network.

With advanced technical expertise in bridge design, including culverts, and a deep understanding of various bridge types, elements, and structural barriers, you will lead complex projects and deliver innovative, high-quality solutions.
Qualifications and Experience
- Appropriate engineering qualification in engineering or related discipline
- Demonstrated extensive experience in the field of research and development of standards and guidelines.
- Demonstrate experience in the use of Australian Standards, Codes, Bridge Technical Notes, Guideline etc.

- Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019
- May Involve evening or weekend work including occasional overnight travel
- You may be required to undertake a medical and other safety compliance requirement
