About the Role

Reporting to the Team Leader - Structural Design, the Lead Structural Drafter sits within the Assets and Engineering division and is responsible for leading the structural and geotechnical drafting function, providing drafting and expert advice, and leading the drafting team.

The role is responsible for working with the Team Leader - Structural Design in leading the technical capability development and uplift of the drafting team within the Design Services branch, and will involve technical training and capability development, and technical oversight of less experienced staff

The Lead Structural Drafter is responsible for leading a team who will deliver the concept design and detailed design drafting of structures and geotechnical works including undertaking geometry verification, as required, and providing advice on constructability.

The Lead Structural Drafter will be responsible for providing expert advice in the field of structural drafting and associated construction.  They will be responsible for knowledge sharing, and capability building of staff within the structural drafting team.  They will proactively contribute to the development and refinement of standard documentation and practices relating to the drafting of bridges and other road related structures, and geotechnical drafting requirements.

Position Outcomes / Accountabilities

  • Structural Drafting Delivery - The Lead Structural Drafter ensures that high quality drafting of concept and detailed designs are delivered, and supports the Team Leader - Structural Design to deliver within timeframes and on budget.  The Lead Structural Drafter is responsible for ensuring the independent verification of internal detailed structural drafting is undertaken.
  • Drafting Capability Development - The Lead Structural Drafter develops technical guidance and/or training to uplift the technical capability and provides leadership and guidance to others resulting in enhanced technical capability in relation to structural and geotechnical drafting.
  • Active Contributor - The Lead Structural Drafter actively and effectively contributes to the development of drafting standards and CADD software as required.
  • Trusted Advisor - The Lead Structural Drafter has expertise in structural and geotechnical drafting and stakeholders’ trust and respect the advice and recommendations provided by the incumbent.
  • Stakeholder Management - Effective relationships have been developed and maintained with customers and across DTP and stakeholder issues are well understood.
  • Effective People Leadership - The Lead Structural Drafter provides effective technical leadership, supporting their manager in driving team initiatives and priorities and supports their team by developing technical capability across the team. They help foster a culture where staff are engaged with high levels of cohesion and commitment and deliver on the services required.  They promote and support safe, inclusive and flexible team operations.

Technical Capabilities

  • Structural Drafting (Accomplished) – Advanced practitioners lead drafting projects, integrating innovative drafting techniques and contributing to process improvements within the department.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Engineering drafting and relevant experience in structural design and technology.
