About the Role

The Senior Structural Engineer plays an essential role in the delivery of the Monitor and Complex Inspection Program by undertaking structural inspections and a range of tasks related to the condition assessment of bridges and other road related structures to contribute to structures level of service. A sound understanding of asset deterioration mechanisms is fundamental.

The Senior Engineer will use instrumentation and undertake deterioration assessment to co-ordinate DTP’s information on the remote monitoring of structures and the change in structure’s condition.

As part of their work, the Senior Engineer will be required to negotiate with, and influence key stakeholders, and will apply project management skills to co-ordinate the planning, work scheduling and resource management matters relating to development and delivery of projects.

The Senior Engineer will also be required to develop innovative responses to complex problems.

Position Outcomes / Accountabilities

• Exercise professional independent judgement to undertake structural inspections and a range of tasks related to the condition assessment of bridges and other road related structures to contribute to structures level of service and give advice on maintenance and strengthening investment priorities
• Utilise competent skills in instrumentation and deterioration assessment to co-ordinate DTP information on the remote monitoring of structures and the change in structure’s condition.
• Demonstrate clear communication and sound independent judgment to negotiate with and influence key stakeholders, driving successful project outcomes.
• In accordance with project scope, apply project management skills to co-ordinate the planning, work scheduling and resource management matters relating to development and delivery of projects
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of a culture of innovation and continual process improvement. Support the Team Leader in the design and delivery of initiatives to ensure team capability growth in the area of assessment of structures

Key Selection Criteria

The DTP is seeking a skilled professional with strong digital and technological literacy to support project delivery, guide teams, and apply critical thinking to resolve complex issues while driving innovation and continuous improvement. The role requires applied engineering expertise, including the use of systematic tools, risk and hazard management frameworks, and the ability to plan and deliver well-defined engineering projects. The successful candidate will also lead Level 3 Bridge Inspections, providing expert analysis of structural conditions and producing high-quality, detailed inspection reports.

Qualifications and Experience

Mandatory

• Tertiary qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering
• A solid understanding of road structure types and elements
• OHS (Occupational Health and Safety) principles awareness

Desirable

• Bridge inspection or construction experience
• Experience in Project Management
• Experience in Asset Management
