Network Design and Integration delivers transport priorities through the planning, development and maintenance of an integrated pipeline of projects and strategic initiatives that provide safe, efficient and sustainable outcomes to all Victorians.


About the role
The Senior Engineer – Transport System Modelling is responsible for providing sound technical and traffic engineering advice and analysis for the Department of Transport and Planning, and the wider portfolio in relation to changes to the road network.  This role has a focus on performing microsimulation modelling and network modelling.  Under guidance, the Senior Engineer – Transport System Modelling will use problem solving and analysis to resolve complex transport issues.

You will coordinate project delivery, guiding tasks to successful completion while proactively engaging stakeholders to build value-driven relationships. This role applies a broad understanding of analytics techniques, including emerging trends in big data and data science, to support accurate model testing and validation. It also involves delivering robust data analysis and network planning to address complex transport and precinct challenges, providing clear insights to inform decision-making.

This role involves conducting traffic analysis across urban and freeway scenarios, applying analytical tools, and implementing basic optimisation strategies. It also contributes to traffic engineering design, incorporating safety for vulnerable road users, supporting ITS planning, and assisting with road-based public transport design solutions.

 

Position accountabilities
This role delivers technical analysis and modelling to review changing traffic patterns, providing expert advice on operational and network impacts in line with departmental priorities. You will contribute to project planning and policy development, prepare technical documentation, and support operational service delivery for signalised intersections. Strong communication skills are essential to convey complex concepts, advise on risks and challenges, and engage stakeholders on key transport priorities.

 

Qualifications and experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Engineering or related discipline (mandatory).
  • Demonstrated experience in traffic modelling such as mesoscopic modelling, microsimulation modelling and intersection modelling. (desirable).
