Design Services is a multidiscipline design branch within A&E that provides expert quality technical advice and design services for our clients across the Department, including expertise in geotechnical, pavement, structural and road design.

About the Role

Reporting to the Team Leader – Road Design, the Senior Engineer / Technical Officer – Road Design is responsible for the end-to-end design, documentation, and delivery of road design projects within the Department of Transport and Planning’s (DTP) Design Services branch. The role covers all project stages from concept to detailed design, including intersection layouts, geometric road design, safety barriers, drainage, signage, linemarking, 3D modelling, and quantity reporting using Bentley MicroStation and OpenRoads. With a strong focus on Safe System principles, the position also supports continuous improvement, capability development, and collaboration across teams, maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders such as DTP’s Transport Services Division and the Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority.

Position Outcomes / Accountabilities

  • Accountability 1 - Road Design Delivery: Utilises working knowledge of road design frameworks, policies, standards and guidelines to develop, design and document road design projects in both the Victorian rural and urban road environments, under limited supervision within agreed timeframes and budgets.
  • Accountability 2 - Stakeholder Management: Develops and maintains effective relationships with peers and customers across DTP, as required, and understands and addresses stakeholder issues under limited supervision.
  • Accountability 3 - Communication: Prepare reports, briefs and correspondence on complex issues that impact at project level. Convey specialist concepts and advice in alignment with design guidelines.
  • Accountability 4 - Road Design Technical Advisor: Continue to develop technical experience to be able to provide input in the provision of technical advice to customers across DTP under limited supervision.

 

Key Selection Criteria

The DTP is seeking a skilled professional with strong project delivery, problem-solving, and collaboration skills to contribute to the design and documentation of road projects. The role requires applied expertise in geometric road design, roadside safety, and CADD modelling using Bentley MicroStation and OpenRoads. Success in this role will rely on critical thinking, adaptability to changing priorities, and the ability to work effectively across teams to deliver high-quality, site-specific road design solutions.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering (mandatory)
  • 3-5 years relevant and recent experience in undertaking design and documentation of road design projects (mandatory)
  • Robust knowledge of road design, roadside infrastructure and drainage, applying relevant standards and guidelines such as Austroads Guide to Road Design, relevant DTP Supplements and other relevant guidelines in relation to road design in both rural and urban road environments (mandatory)
  • Experience in the use of Bentley Software, including MicroStation Connect, OpenRoads Designer and Projectwise (mandatory)
