SprayLine Road Services (SRS) is a commercialised branch within the Network Operations Division of the Department of Transport and Planning providing road maintenance services, construction and associated civil works, bituminous spray sealing and line marking to DTP, other state road authorities, municipal councils, and private industry. SRS delivers services locally within the communities and is committed to ensuring quality, innovative and sustainable outcomes. SRS performs a key role as an internal provider to DTP, providing emergency response, maintaining organisational capability and supporting DTP in being an informed purchaser.

 

About the role

*This is a Fixed Term Position until 30th June 2026*

The Environmental Specialist supports operational activities by ensuring SRS meets environmental regulatory obligations and promotes sustainable practices. This role is more focused on day-to-day environmental operations, monitoring compliance, and ensuring continuous improvement in operational processes. Reporting to the Associate Director, HSEQ and Risk, the role works closely with operational teams to provide guidance and ensure that environmental considerations are integrated into day-to-day operations. This is an operationally focused role that requires close interaction with field teams, leadership, and external partners.

The role requires a strong blend of operational and environmental expertise, with the ability to integrate environmental strategies into day-to-day processes, identify and address risks, and continuously improve performance while reducing impact. The successful candidate will be skilled in influencing and communicating with internal and external stakeholders, leveraging systems to monitor compliance, and achieving practical, measurable outcomes. Position accountabilities

The Department of Transport and Planning is seeking an experienced Environmental Specialist to support sustainable and compliant road maintenance operations. This role is ideal for a proactive professional who can integrate environmental management practices into operational projects and contribute to the department’s commitment to environmental excellence.

In this position, you will maintain up-to-date knowledge of environmental legislation, ensuring that operational teams consistently meet regulatory requirements. You will play a key role in identifying and managing environmental risks, developing strategies to mitigate potential impacts, and embedding sustainability into day-to-day maintenance activities. By championing environmentally responsible practices, you will help ensure operations are both efficient and sustainable.

You will also provide project support, collaborating with leadership teams to implement environmental actions across operational initiatives, ensuring that projects are delivered on time and in compliance with regulatory standards. Building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders will be a core part of your role, allowing you to influence and enhance environmental outcomes across the department’s operations.

The ideal candidate brings practical experience in environmental compliance, risk management, and sustainability, coupled with strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills. You will be adaptable, results-focused, and capable of balancing multiple priorities while delivering measurable improvements in environmental performance.

Qualifications and experience

 Mandatory

 • At least five years’ experience in a role with a strong focus on operational environmental management, preferably within the public sector or government services. 

 • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related field. 

 

 Desirable 

 • Experience in supporting operational teams in achieving environmental compliance and improving environmental practices on the ground.

 • Knowledge of road maintenance and construction industry standards or experience in a similar operational field.

Pre-employment checks and employment conditions

All new appointments to the department will be subject to a National Criminal Records Check, Misconduct Screening, and a Qualification Check where there is a requirement for a mandatory qualification. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa necessary for the nature of the position.
