First Peoples – State Relations Group in DPC is seeking talented and passionate individuals committed to progressing the Victorian Government’s nation leading work with First Peoples. This is a unique opportunity to work in new and innovative ways that recognise First Peoples as the self-determining drivers of Aboriginal affairs in Victoria. These roles will contribute to the ground-breaking work of the Group in the areas of truth, treaty, self-determination and cultural rights.
The First Peoples – State Relations Group supports an extensive program of priority work with First Peoples, applying a strong understanding of self-determination to our work practices and in providing clear and robust advice to the Minister for First Peoples, Premier, Cabinet and senior executives within the Group.

About the role
Reporting to the Team Leader – Operations, Enforcement and Compliance, this position will lead and conduct regulatory investigations and conduct appropriate compliance and enforcement action under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (the Act). This will include compiling prosecution briefs of evidence and preparing accurate and thorough reports. The position will also undertake administrative and client services duties when required; assist with the development and implementation of related policies and procedures; and build partnerships with Registered Aboriginal Parties and other key stakeholders. Investigators also contribute to the training for Authorised Officers and Aboriginal Heritage Officers and the ongoing development of internal policies and procedures.
Key selection criteria
- Demonstrated experience in conducting investigations in a compliance, regulatory or law enforcement environment with a strong understanding of legislative processes and demonstrated ability to interpret and apply legislation.
- Demonstrated ability to establish, manage and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills with sound judgement and capacity to make decisions and recommendations where diverse interests need to be considered.
- Strong critical analysis and reporting skills, attention to detail and excellent writing skills.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to express opinions, information and key points clearly and concisely via effective verbal and written communication.
Mandatory requirements
- Some travel across Victoria is necessary to undertake this role. A current Victorian driver’s license is required and a willingness to travel.
- Certificate IV in Government (Investigations) or similar, or the ability to obtain the relevant qualification within 6 months of commencement in the role.
