The Community Security and Emergency Management Branch

The branch shadows the work of the Police and Emergency Services portfolios in the Department of Justice and Community Safety. The branch also provides advice to the Premier and senior officials on national security policy (including the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion) and provides advice on matters relating to protective security. The branch supports whole-of-government arrangements in the event of major emergencies. Occasional after-hours work can be required.

About the Role

The successful candidate will serve as Manager of the branch’s Police and National Security Policy team and have a focus on shadowing the police portfolio and providing advice on national security issues including counter terrorism and violent extremism.

In these roles, you will be part of a high performing and supportive team providing policy advice to the Premier and senior executives. You will work closely with other key departments and areas within DPC.  As required you will also support work being undertaken by the Social Policy group and wider department.

This position requires you to deal with sensitive issues in a confidential manner. Work will be conducted with a high degree of accuracy in short time frames. 

About You

We are seeking applicants who have demonstrated experience from the following criteria:

  1. Ability to manage a team including through clearly defining roles and expectations and aligning a team with the organisational values and goals, and the allocation and management of workload.
  2. Demonstrated experience in policy analysis to inform the development, coordination and implementation of policies and programs across the police portfolio and national security policy issues.
  3. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including ability to commission and edit complex briefs, letters, emails and reports using clear, concise and grammatically correct language, ensuring that they contain the information necessary to achieve their purpose and meet audience needs.
  4. Highly developed interpersonal and negotiation skills, with an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, provide advice on processes and policies, and work effectively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
  5. Sound conceptual and analytical skills, with demonstrated ability to synthesise information from a range of sources and events, including from outside own areas of responsibility.
  6. Eligibility and willingness to obtain and maintain a National Security Clearance (Negative Vetting 1) at employer’s expense.

You must be an Australian citizen, as this role requires a security clearance.
