About Us

The Victorian Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) was established in December 2025 to reduce violence in Victoria through an early intervention and prevention approach. It operates across Government to tackle and disrupt violence by:

  • Taking a preventative and public health approach to address the root causes of violence
  • Coordinating across Government and local services so crime prevention works better, with fewer gaps
  • Using data and intelligence to target its interventions when and where they’re needed most
  • Investing in and delivering the programs that are proven to turn people away from crime, and new programs which address gaps and emerging crime trends

About the Role

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Policy and Programs, the Senior Adviser (Data and Intelligence) role will work collaboratively across the VRU to:

  • lead the analysis and interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data to identify crime trends, risk factors and place-based drivers of harm, translating complex information into clear insights and/or options analysis for senior stakeholders
  • strengthen internal data capability by developing tools and approaches (e.g. Power BI dashboards) that enable the VRU to analyse and visualise crime and community data, including generating insights for specific local areas to inform place-based responses

Key Accountabilities

  1. Build and strengthen internal data capability within the VRU, including developing and maintaining analytical tools and visualisation (e.g. Power BI dashboards) that enable the team to interrogate crime and community datasets and generate insights for specific local areas and priority cohorts.
  2. Develop and implement a comprehensive data warehouse (and/or database) and accompanying management processes, considering governance requirements, ETL processes, and critical datasets housed in other departments and related agencies.
  3. Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with data and intelligence teams across government, including agencies such as DJCS, DE, DFFH, DH and VicPol, to facilitate access to relevant datasets, support integrated analysis and strengthen the cross-government evidence base on the drivers of violence.
  4. Lead the analysis and interpretation of complex datasets to identify crime trends, risk factors and place-based drivers of violence, synthesising quantitative and qualitative information into clear insights that inform policy development, strategic planning and operational responses.

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Building data capability: Demonstrated ability to develop or support data capability within teams, including designing tools, dashboards or analytical approaches that enable colleagues to access, interpret and use data to inform policy and strategic work.
  2. Data and intelligence analysis: Demonstrated experience analysing and interpreting complex quantitative and qualitative datasets to identify trends, risk factors and emerging issues. Ability to synthesise multiple data sources and generate actionable insights to inform policy, strategy and decision-making.
  3. Policy analysis and data visualisation: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience applying evidence, research and data to policy development and strategic analysis. Demonstrated ability to develop clear and accessible data visualisation and analytical products (e.g. dashboards, reports or briefings) to support evidence-based decision-making.
