About the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC)
We work for the people of Victoria by helping the Government achieve its strategic objectives. We do this by supporting the Premier, the Minister for Treaty and First Peoples and the Minister for Multicultural Affairs, as well as the Cabinet. Our vision is to be recognised and respected leaders in whole-of-government policy and performance.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, policy, analytical and communication skills coupled with an ability to influence stakeholders and work effectively in a team environment. An understanding of the Aboriginal community in Victoria is an advantage.

The First Peoples – State Relations Group

The First Peoples – State Relations Group is the group within DPC responsible for nation leading work in the areas of cultural rights, self-determination, Treaty, and truth – an extensive program of priority work with First Peoples. We recognise Victoria’s First Peoples as the self-determining drivers of Aboriginal affairs in Victoria. We are committed to building ongoing, just, and respectful relationships between self-determining First Peoples and the State as a priority focus.

The Policy and Closing the Gap Branch

The Policy and Closing the Gap Branch leads a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to Aboriginal affairs to improve outcomes for First Peoples. It oversees Victoria’s commitments under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, supports the Premier and Minister for Treaty and First Peoples, and provides strategic advice to drive reform across portfolios.

The branch also delivers key self-determination initiatives, including the Victorian Aboriginal Affairs Framework and the Self-Determination Reform Framework. It works across government to strengthen accountability through monitoring and reporting and builds strong partnerships with Aboriginal leaders to support meaningful engagement and collaboration.

About you

As our ideal candidate you will have:

  • Understanding and awareness of Aboriginal self-determination reform priorities for Victorian Aboriginal communities.
  • Well-developed people management skills, including experience in leading, coaching and motivating a team in a high volume, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong project management capabilities, including experience in developing project objectives and milestones, assigning responsibilities, monitoring project risks, issues and performance, and applying appropriate project management tools.
