Title: Senior Adviser
Senior Adviser – VPS5 – Fixed term position for 12 months.
What you’ll do
The Senior Adviser, Monitoring and Reporting will play a lead role in conducting reviews that assess departments’ capability and readiness to deliver on future government priorities and challenges. This includes core public sector areas such as leadership, integrity, community engagement, service delivery, projects and procurement, ministerial engagement, and workforce management.
The role will also support monitoring and reporting on other commitments and obligations, including sharing good practice and identifying areas for improvement.
The role requires curiosity, excellent research, analytical and writing skills, strong stakeholder management, and a commitment to improving the public service.
Who we’re looking for

- Policy design and development: Keeps up to date with contemporary issues and develops clear, evidence-based policy options and recommendations. Considers impacts across the service, provides expert advice, and understands organisational pressures and priorities.
- Interpersonal and stakeholder management: Builds and manages effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Understands their needs and organisational context to achieve positive outcomes.
- Communicates with impact: Produces clear, concise and accurate briefs, correspondence and reports. Identifies key messages and provides advice tailored to the audience and decision-making needs.
- Flexibility and adaptability: Responds positively and quickly to changing priorities. Works effectively across teams and organisations and adapts to new circumstances.
- Project delivery: Translates strategies into effective programs and projects. Monitors performance manages risks and issues, and ensures objectives are achieved and outcomes evaluated.
- Critical thinking and problem solving: Considers broader perspectives and draws on relevant guidelines and expertise to assess issues. Develops practical, effective solutions that deliver tangible outcomes.
Experience and qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
- A tertiary qualification in public policy or related disciplines and/or significant experience in public policy in a government context.
One or more of the following will be highly regarded:
- Experience in working in a consulting or government advisory services environment.
